Report of the Chief Shop Steward-Maintenance

I am extremely disappointed with the ratification of the tentative collective agreement.  It does nothing to address the issues faced by the maintenance workers.  I now know what they mean when they say that democracy can be ugly. How do we, the maintenance group, get a voice?  How can we have our issues addressed?  How do the few members in groups three and four get honest representation? Could it be true that CUPW just might be guilty of “Labour Genocide” against groups three and four? We may have to test this theory with some third party intervention.

Anyway the blood letting continues in tech. services. We had three members leave for various reasons. Those members have been replaced by new members, and although we have lost approximately fifty years of experience we at least have broken even manpower wise.  We are still short six positions, and this could change for the worst at anytime.

Some good news; we are going to get two MAM 10 apprentices in September. The interest in Calgary was low, even though we did have both sisters and brother apply for the positions.

I was facilitating basics shop steward training at the CDLC this weekend.  I must say I believe that I have been educated as much as any of the participants of the course. I encourage all shop stewards who want to try facilitating to get involved with the CDLC. They will be more than willing to give you an opportunity to educate others.

Also it is very educational to see how the house of labour and affiliates contend with similar issue that face the members of CUPW.  We are not an island and we must participate in the labour movement regardless of minor costs. The rewards gained with participation are priceless.  Incidentally the training follows the guidelines and lessons are prepared and recognized by the CLC, (Canadian Labour Congress) to whom we are also an affiliate.

In closing I would like to encourage all to rally to support the ATU (transit) worker.  I hope to see you on their picket line.  Come on out and see how it is really done.
