The Year Was
1968

-  Pierre Elliot Trudeau became Canada’s 15th Prime Minister

-  American troops killed scores of Vietnamese civilians in the Mai
   Lai Massacre

-  The musical Hair officially opened on Broadway

-  Up, Up and Away, by the 5th Dimension, won both song and record
   of the year

-  NASA launched Apollo 7, the 1st manned Apollo mission.  The
mission included the 1st live broadcast from orbit and the testing of
   the lunar module docking maneuver

-  Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy were both
   assassinated

-  The Montreal Canadiens defeated the St Louis Blues 4 games to 0
    and won the Stanley Cup

CUPW and LCUC, although separate Unions, fought together in a 3 week long strike and won the “Rand Formula”.  CUPW signed a collective agreement that for the first time embodied rights and benefits that could no longer be taken away at a whim by management or the Federal government.  The new contract provided better wages, improved working conditions, and obligated the employer to consult with the Union on many issues that were previously decided upon exclusively by management.  A grievance process was put in place.  CUPW was certified to represent part-time postal clerks.   The Union began the process of fighting for part-timers.  This made it harder for management to pit part-timers against full-timers.
